Carry-on luggage fees (Wizz Air)

UPDATE October, 2012

It seams Wizz Air is happy with luggage fee it introduced on London-Katowice route earlier this year and from 24th October a new cabin baggage policy will be applied across entire Wizz Air network.

The small cabin bag is the same size as it was introduced in August: 42cm x 32cm x 25cm (16.5in x 12.6in x 9.8in) or smaller with weight allowance 10kg.

August, 2012

They increased dimensions of  large cabin bag comparing with restrintions they had in August. So you must pay a €10 fee if your bag is bigger then small bag and it cannot exceed 56cm x 45cm x 25cm (22in x 18in x 10in) and must fit in the overhead compartment.

I was waiting how long it will take cheap airlines to introduce fee for carry-on bags. Here we go. Wizzair is starting it from 1st of August.
New fee for cabin baggage will be introduced only on one direction (London-Katowice) at the beginning, but I think it won’t take long make it mandatory on all directions.

From 1st of August 2012 Wizzair cabin luggage rules are:

1. Small cabin bag:
If your cabin baggage is of size 42cm x 32cm x 25cm (16.5in x 12.6in x 9.8in) or smaller it can be taken onboard free of charge. It must fit under the seat in front of you. The weight allowance is 10kg.

2. Large cabin bag:
If your cabin baggage is larger than the dimensions of a small cabin bag but not exceeding 55cm x 40cm x 20cm (21.7in x 15.7in x 7.8in), you can take it onboard for a newly introduced €10 fee. It must fit in the overhead compartment. The weight allowance is 10kg.

What is small cabin bag according Wizzair? Even some laptop bags are bigger then these dimensions. Here is carry on bag restrictions by some other airlines:

Ryanair: 55cm x 40cm x 20cm (21.7in x 15.7in x 7.8in)
American Airlines: 56cm x 35cm x 23cm (22in x 14in x 9in)
British Airways: 56cm x 45cm x 25cm (22in x 18in x 10in)
Qantas: 56cm x 36 cm x + 23cm (22in x 14in x 9in)

Everything fits into large cabin bag category and that means almost all passengers will be forced to pay €10 fee. How it is convenient for the airline – we are not increasing price of ticket, only everybody will need to pay additional €10.

This means wearable carry on “bags” becomes even more attractive until airlines will start weight passengers.
